John Gary - 1965

Over in Killarney,
Many years ago,
My mother sang a song to me
In tones so sweet and low.
Just a simple little ditty,
In her good old Irish way,
And I'd give the world if she could sing
That song to me this day.

Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral,
Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral,
Hush, now don't you cry!
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral,
Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral,
That's an Irish lullaby.

Oft, in dreams I wander
To that cot again,
I feel her arms a-huggin' me
As when she held me then.
And I hear her voice a-hummin'
To me as in days or yore,
When she used to rock me fast asleep
Outside the cabin door.

Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral,
Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral,
Hush, now don't you cry!
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral,
Too-ra-loo-ra-li,
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo-ral,
That's an Irish lullaby

Another verse...

Oh, I can hear that music
I can hear that song
Filling me with memories
Of a mother's love so strong

Its melody still haunts me
These many years gone bye
Too ra loo ra loo ral
Until the day I die

 “When they’ve finished reading,
Olivia’s mother gives her a kiss and says,
‘You know, you really wear me out.
But I love you anyway.’
And Olivia gives her a kiss back and says,
‘I love you anyway, too.’”
Ian Falconer
in Olivia

“My mother had a slender, small body,

but a large heart—a heart so large that
everybody’s joys found welcome in it,
and hospitable accommodation.”
Mark Twain

“A mother is the truest friend we have,
 when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us;
when adversity takes the place of prosperity;
when friends desert us;
when trouble thickens around us,
still will she cling to us,
and endeavor by her kind precepts and
counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness,
and cause peace to return to our hearts.”
Washington Irving

Memories are begun in our hearts so bare
Some stay tucked away - we wouldn't dare!
While others, with all, we want to share;
But mine, with you, are treasured and rare.

My room-mate, Granny Ida Belle Weese,
Was one of the best you would ever want to meet.
Stories of old she loved to tell,
Such as the perfect man she married who worked for the rail.

Their son, Goff, you met at 4-H camp on the hill.
After two separates romances and reminders of the thrill,
You sent him a letter that rekindled the chill.
The rest is history with offspring named Bill, Will and Jill.

The shop you operated was filled with joy.
Your clients were friends we all loved and adored.
It was the only beauty parlor for miles around.
You, so patient, allowed limited bounds.

The girl with many colors of hair was my game.
Even though it gained me no great fame.
The time spent in the shop experiencing friendships it became.
It is now a special memory that I love to replay.

I would get the giggles and you could not sleep
and knew I had to stop or be in trouble deep.
Then you would say "last time - not another peep"
Or from that bed I knew you would leap.

I didn't like peeling those potatoes for stew,
or canning the tomatoes, or the garden you grew,
but somehow - some way - I guess you knew
I would need the experience someday for my future crew.

Thanks for doing the dishes for me.
So off to my activities I could flee.
And, allowing me to get those weejuns you see,
even though you didn't always agree.

Whether I was playing softball all day
or loudly cheering,
from the top bleacher you watched my way.
I knew everything was fine and ok
because you were always there to stay.

There were ups and downs along the way.
Your love and support were never at bay.
Not once in a while but every single day -
And nothing or no-one can take that away.

Thank you for being my precious and beautiful mother.
I am proud of you, who you are, your values and
the many characteristics you placed on display.

Love, Becky

Hayley Westenra - New Zealand - 2009

Mother of mine, you gave to me
All of my life to do as I please.
I owe everything I have to you
Mother, Mother, of mine.

Mother of mine, when I was young
You showed me the right way
Things had to be done.
Without your love, where would I be
Mother, Mother, of mine

Mother, you gave me happiness,
Much more than words can say,
I pray to the Lord that He may
Bless you every night and everyday

Mother of mine now I am grown,
And I can walk straight all on my own
I'd like to give you what you gave to me.
Mother, Mother of mine

Mother you gave me happiness.
Much more than words can say
I pray to the Lord that He may
Bless you every night and everyday

Mother of mine, now I am grown
And I can walk straight all on my own
I'd like to give you what you gave to me.
Mother, Mother of mine.
Mother, Mother of mine.
Mother of Mine - Unknown

Mother o’ Mine

Rudyard Kipling

If I were hanged on the highest hill,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose love would follow me still,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!

If I were drowned in the deepest sea,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose tears would come down to me,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!

If I were damned of body and soul,
I know whose prayers would make me whole,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!

The Light That Failed.)

Mother and Daughter - Mary Cassatt

You don’t really understand human nature
unless you know why a child on a merry-go-round
will wave at his parents every time around —
and why his parents will always wave back.
William D. Tammeus
On Mother’s Day I have written a poem for you.
In the interest of poetic economy and truth,
I have succeeded in concentrating my deepest
feelings and beliefs into two perfectly crafted lines:
You’re my mother,
I would have no other!
Forest Houtenschil

Mother's love is peace.
It need not be acquired.
It need not be deserved.
Erich Fromm
